Drop in to work on a project or try your hand at mosaic making for the first time. If you're a beginner, one of our staff members would be happy to get you started with a beginner's project. We will provide you with all the info on tools, adhesives and setting that you need to get started!

Come when you want and stay for an hour or for the whole day!

We have an upbeat, inspiring environment with great music that will make you want to get cracking! No pressure, just good fun! Bring your friends or make some new ones at Mosaic Café ! TOTAL BEGINNERS WELCOME!!! No art or mosaic experience necessary!

Cost is $7/ hour
Fee includes workspace, adhesives for both interior and exterior pieces and use of all tools. A monitor will be available to answer questions, but no formal instruction is given at Mosaic Café . We encourage you to experiment and have fun in a non-structured creative environment!

Buy all your materials by the piece or by the pound at Mosaic Studio Supply. We have all types of mosaic materials” tiles, glass, tesserae of all kinds. Buy your substrate already prepped and ready to receive mosaic.

How it works

1. When you arrive at Mosaic Cafe, check in at the front counter of Mosaic Studio Supply.
2. Select your project base (substrate). Choose from a mirror frame, flower pot, stepping stone, picture frame, coaster set, address sign, tabletop or one of our other prepared substrates, all priced at discounted Mosaic Café rates.*
3. Select your tesserae/mosaic materials from our shop, Mosaic Studio Supply.
4. Clock in and take a seat at one of our café tables and get started! Your first hour starts when you sit down and begin your project.
5. Have an awesome time making mosaics with old or new friends, listen to great music and let the creative juices flow!
6. Stay as long as you want, clean up starts at 4:45.

Grouting your piece

Leave it for us to grout for a small fee. Grout additional.
Small pieces under 10" - $7.00
Medium pieces under 14" - $10
Large pieces up to 18"- $15
Three dimensional pieces under 8" square- $10
Three dimensional pieces under 12" square- $15
Three dimensional pieces 12" to 18" square- $25

For those who have grouted before ONLY and already are comfortable with the process, you can grout during Mosaic Lab (see schedule for times).

FAQ

Q: How does Mosaic Café differ from Mosaic 101 or one of the beginning courses at IMA?
A:Mosaic café is a program of Mosaic Studio Supply and not an IMA course. Additionally, all of our beginning level courses at IMA are weekend intensives, which means students commit 9 or more hours to specific lecture, demonstration, project design and creation. Information on many types of surfaces, prep, adhesives, cutting and setting techniques are explored. There is a professional instructor there to guide each student in the creation of their piece. Beginning mosaic courses at IMA are more structured and focused on education and technique

Q: Can I bring my kids to Mosaic Café?
A: Kids 10 or over are welcome at Mosaic Café at the same rate as adults. Kids under 13 MUST be accompanied by an adult participant. Kids between the ages of 5-10 are welcome at one of our Kids Mosaic classes at IMA.

Q: Can I work on a large- scale piece at Mosaic Café?
A: Mosaic Café is really geared towards those working on smaller pieces. We encourage beginners and hope to be able to have space for everyone who wants to participate. If you and your project take up more than one spot, we will be happy to accommodate you at a double spot or full table rate. If you are experienced and have the skill level to tackle a larger project and want to work in a group studio environment, Mosaic Lab at IMA might be an option for you.

Q: Can I work on projects that are not specifically mosaic at Mosaic Café?
A: Sorry, this is not in the spirit of the Café. If you want to work on a concrete sculpture or a tile making project or something else we offer at IMA, that would be best done in Lab.

Q: What is the difference between Mosaic Café at Mosaic Studio Supply and Mosaic Lab at IMA?
A: Lab at IMA is geared towards those who have had mosaic experience and instruction and are working on their own self-directed projects from home or class, using materials that they purchase or bring from home. Most Lab participants are past students. Lab is paid for by the three hour session (not hourly) or as an 8-week session. Café is a great environment to experiment with the lighter side of mosaics, with people on hand to help guide you.

Q: Can I store my unfinished projects at at Mosaic Studio Supply?
A: Although we have a large building, we do not have a great deal of storage space. So, unfortunately we do not offer storage space at Mosaic Café. But you are welcome to bring your unfinished pieces back the next time you visit!

Q: Do I have to buy my substrate and materials at Mosaic Studio Supply?
A: Because some surfaces require advance preparation, we prefer that you purchase your surfaces at Mosaic Studio Supply/ Mosaic Café, but in some cases it can work, especially if you have already attended Mosaic Café and inquired as to the suitability of a surface. Much like movie theaters prefer that you not bring in your own snacks, we prefer that Café participants purchase materials from Mosaic Studio Supply- it helps us to keep the cost of Mosaic Café reasonable! So we do understand if you want to bring a few special items from home, but Mosaic Café is really geared towards assisting participants with projects done with materials from our selection!

Q: Can I grout my piece at Mosaic Café?
A: Unfortunately we do not have the facilities in the Mosaic Café room for grouting, which can be messy and requires a water source. We have a number of options for Café participants to get their pieces grouted!

Q: Can I keep a tab at Mosaic Studio Supply while working in Mosaic Café?
A: We would be happy to keep a tab for you, but we require that you leave a credit card or drivers license as a deposit.

Q: Can I have my private mosaic party at Mosaic Café?
A: We are happy to arrange private parties through Institute of Mosaic Art, just ask!

Q: Can I reserve a table space ahead of time?
A: Certainly! You can reserve as many spaces as you want for however long you want, by the hour. Or you can reserve for the first hour and then pay for as long as you want to stay and make mosaics... Reserved spaces must be paid in advance and are non-refundable. We will hold a reserved space for 15 minutes after the hour. Late or no shows will need to pay for reserved space. We have a 24 hour cancellation policy for reserved spaces at Mosaic Café.
